A Juneteenth Cake

A Juneteenth Cake

juneteenth black cocoa devils food cake with dark chocolate ganache and fresh flowers

Honored to be asked to make a cake for our town's Juneteenth celebration this weekend. There were great speakers, a presentation on the work being done by many to preserve and memorialize Altadena's rich Black history and significance, poetry reading, song and an appearance from Assemblyman Chris Holden.

This is a six layer gluten, dairy and refined sugar free Black Cocoa Cake + Dark Chocolate Ganache Buttercream finished with fresh flowers and some gold dragées that was served alongside cupcakes from Little Red Hen – Altadena's oldest Black woman owned business. The black cocoa cake is very similar to a devil’s food cake which I learned has some significance for many African Americans. The joyous colors of these flowers just felt right.

Beautiful Altadena has been home to countless notable Black Americans, from Tuskegee Airmen, to activists and business innovators, to JPL rocket scientists and still boasts one of the highest numbers per capita of Black Americans with post graduate educations in the USA. We’re proud to call this place home.

Happy Juneteenth to all who are celebrating.
