An Ocean Inspired Cake for Earth Day

An Ocean Inspired Cake for Earth Day

An ocean inspired cake to for Earth Day.

We spent my birthday week in Corona del Mar at a friend's beautiful beach house soaking up the sun and sea air. Our rescue poodle Spike has been living his best life here and is convinced he now lives at the beach... without our cats!

Of course, I had to make myself a birthday cake. I had lots of ideas in mind but after a couple of days by the sea I knew I wanted to create something inspired by the late winter seascape.

This is a simple vanilla cake made delicious with homemade bourbon vanilla extract and colored like sea glass with and  a hint of butterfly pea flower. The vanilla bean buttercream palette is inspired by the colors of the early spring sea and kelp beds, all colored again with butterfly pea flower. And the effect of the shimmer of light on breaking waves was made with a little powdered mother of pearl brushed onto the buttercream waves at the end.

If you want to start playing around with colored cakes and treats and buttercream, get yourself some butterfly pea flower powder and get creative! You can find one of my favorites online here.

How could I not create a cake inspired by this?!

Spike!
